Four Steps To Improve Security At A New Office

Posted on: 23 July 2017

Whether you are moving to a larger space to expand your company or you are just opening a new business, you need to make sure that you have the proper security in place. With a new building comes new security challenges, and a commercial locksmith can provide the expertise needed to help keep your business secure. Here are a few options to discuss with your commercial locksmith.

Replace Entrance Doors

Replacing the locks on your doors may not necessarily be enough to secure your business, particularly if they are old. Former employees who worked in the building before your company took over might know secret tricks to get the doors open, so replacing the doors and adding reinforced locks is a great option. Metal doors offer strength and durability, and deadbolts offer additional security. Consider keypad entry locks that require a code to open, as this lets you more easily control who has access. This option also eliminates the possibility of employees losing their office keys, which can leave your business vulnerable.

Add Motion-Detecting Cameras And Lights

To keep your building secure at night or after hours, consider installing motion-detecting lights both inside and outside the building. When the lights come on, potential burglars may be scared off, and the cameras can start recording immediately. The security footage can be turned over to the authorities in the event that there is a burglary or act of vandalism.

Install Emergency Equipment

In addition to warding off potential theft, your security upgrades should also help to keep your employees safe. This means installing emergency exit doors that can be opened quickly from the inside in the event of a fire or other disaster. Your commercial locksmith can also help you to install exit lighting and signs, fire extinguishers, and smoke detectors throughout the building. Be sure to discuss exit plans with the locksmith to ensure signing is in the proper place, and consult with the local fire marshal for additional guidance regarding fire extinguisher and smoke detector placement.

Exterior Lighting

Adding motion lights to the exterior of your building is a great security measure, but you'll also want to add lighting that keeps the exterior of your building and your parking lot visible at night. This can help employees feel more safe as they head to their cars after working late into the night, and it also reduces the ability of potential thieves to hide under the cover of darkness. Take a tour of the building and parking lot at night with your locksmith to identify where these lights should go.

If possible, consider hiring a locksmith to go with you to properties you are interested in renting before you move in. If this isn't a possibility, schedule a walk-through after you've signed the lease to begin working on a plan for security upgrades
